On Mount Carmel, Elijah stands before the whole nation of Israel and asks, “How long will you falter between two opinions?” (1 Kings 18:21). Centuries…

Discussion questions

James 1:7-12

Key thoughts
  1. God owes us nothing He has not promised. We ask in faith, but faith is not a claim on God. If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us, so we can ask for big things and still pray as Jesus did, "not My will, but Yours, be done."
  2. Double-minded means divided allegiance. James's word literally meant "two-souled." Like Israel faltering between two opinions on Mount Carmel, the double-minded believer keeps God as one option among several, just in case.
  3. God should be our only plan. Saul asked, but his heart was not in it; when God was silent, he went looking for a medium, and his contingency cost him his life. Shopping for wisdom usually ends at whichever voice agrees with you.
  4. An unstable life is built in the wrong place. The double-minded man is unstable in all his ways, like the house on the sand. In Christ, powered by the Holy Spirit, we have the power to build on the Rock.
  5. Low station is not low standing, and endurance is blessed. Poverty is not holiness, and riches fade like a flower in the burning sun. The one who endures trial is approved, tested and found genuine, and receives the crown of life: a reward for a proven life, not the price of salvation, which is by grace.
  1. Read James 1:6-8 and 1 John 5:14-15. What is the difference between asking God in faith and expecting Him to give us whatever we ask? How does "according to His will" shape the way you pray for big things, like the vision for the future of our church?

  2. Read 1 Kings 18:20-21. James's word for double-minded literally meant "two-souled." Where are you tempted to keep God as one option among several, diversifying in case He doesn't come through in the way we want?

  3. Read 1 Samuel 28:6-7 and 2 Timothy 4:3. When God seems silent, where do you go first for answers: a spouse, a friend, the internet, a chatbot? How can you tell when you are shopping for wisdom until you find a voice that agrees with you?

  4. Read Matthew 7:24-27 alongside James 1:8. Both houses faced the same storm. If an area of your life feels unstable right now, what might that say about where you are building, and what would confession and repentance look like?

  5. Read James 1:9-11. James says the lowly brother can boast in his exaltation and the rich will fade like a flower of the field. What are you most tempted to boast in, and how does your relationship with Christ change what is worth boasting about?

  6. Read James 1:12 and Ephesians 2:8-9. If the crown of life is not how we are saved, what is it? How does knowing that God approves faith that endures help you keep going in what you are facing now?

Applications
  1. Ask boldly, then surrender. Bring one big request to God every day this week, and end each prayer the way Jesus did: "not my will, but Yours."
  2. Go to God first. Before you reach for another voice this week, whether a friend, a search, or a chatbot, take the question to God first in prayer and in His Word.
  3. Check your foundation. Name one area of your life that feels unstable. Confess where your allegiance has been split, and take one step this week to build that area on the Rock.
Closing prayer

Father, You are God, and there is no other. Forgive us for faltering between two opinions, for asking You while we keep a backup plan, and for shopping for wisdom until we find a voice that tells us what we want to hear. Give us an undivided heart. Teach us to ask boldly and in faith, according to Your will, and to pray as Jesus prayed, "not My will, but Yours, be done." Make us wise builders who hear Your words and do them, so that when the rain descends and the winds blow, we stand on the Rock. Let the lowly among us glory in the place You have given them in Christ, and let those with much remember that everything but You will fade like a flower of the field. Strengthen us to endure every trial, until we are approved and receive the crown of life You have promised to those who love You. In Jesus' name, amen.
